How to Compare NZ Health Insurance — Decision Framework
We don't publish a 'best NZ health insurance' pick. The FMA discourages unverifiable rankings, and the right choice depends on your specific situation (age, pre-existing conditions, family stage, oncology-cover preference). Here's a framework + the real product set.
Key considerations
- › Identify your dealbreaker first — is it oncology / non-Pharmac drug cover (e.g. Keytruda)? Mental health? Pre-existing condition handling?
- › Look at the Surgical + Non-Surgical Benefit dollar amounts — bigger is better for catastrophic cover.
- › Check pre-existing rules carefully if you have ANY existing condition (Southern Cross uses disclose-and-accept; nib uses 3-year stand-down with permanent carve-outs).
- › Use the topic pages (Pharmac, ACC, MH, etc.) to compare specific dimensions before getting quotes.
- › For pricing, use /quotes/ — premiums vary too much by personal factors for a generic ranking to be useful.
